SCAD LACOSTE
my french 50's inspired handmade tile project...
finished piece measures 2.5m x 1.25m - to be installed in Lacoste, Provence, France July 2019.

tile inspiration, designing, and creating process in photos...

george jouve and roger capron are my two major inspirations.

the local beauty is an obvious inspiration, but the cobblestone road that goes through lacoste is a major source of inspiration as well!

to be approximately 1.25 meters high by 2.75 meters wide

Solargil en provence is my clay source - and I wish they could be my clay source all the time… the colors (oolala) + they stamp their clay (gorgeous!)

playing around with designs, scale, and shapes

these are my favorites, but always good to edit…
test maquettes for clay options…

all the clay options!

must try out glazes as well!

and the winner is supermanga!! black clay, white white glaze.

the white glaze crawls a bit… but I kind of like how each will turn out different. I’ll test out using an engobe underneath to see how it looks as well…

time to scale up the designs, make sure they’re the proper size for the final design - plus a little extra for 20% shrinkage!

loving the dimensions on these… hope it all works well as a whole

add a little dimension to the filler tiles as well!

time to start making molds

plâtre - french for plaster

photos of lacoste, and surrounding areas... (pinch me!)

classic - lacoste, provence-alpes-cote d’azur, france - aka my home for two months this spring

beautiful colorful glazes at the pottery show in bonnieux

a dream to see these two collections side by side… pieces on the right are roger capron left is the collection for the parker palm springs hotel I designed while at jonathan adler. 50 Cinquante is packed with incredible pieces - I want 5 of everything in there!!!

the lovely maryse brisson has an incredible collection at her store in l’isle-sur-la-sorgue - I love every piece in there.

to see domonique pouchin’s work in real life was a real treat. much bigger than i’d imagined, very impressive!

the colors and layers in provence are as always inspiring.
